The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Educational Foundation, which is the largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women in the world, supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. The Foundation funds:

  • groundbreaking research
  • fellowships and grants for outstanding women from around the globe
  • special awards
  • vital community action projects
  • symposia, roundtables and forums

The Foundation's cornerstone has always been the remarkable energy and commitment of AAUW members, other individuals, corporations and foundations that make contributions and help raise money for the Foundation's work.

The Educational Foundation is a 501©(3) organization. Contributions are tax deductible for federal income tax purposes.

  • In 1888, the founders of the American Association of University Women established the first fellowship in this country for a graduate woman scholar. Ida Street received $350 to pursue a graduate degree in education at the University of Michigan, at a time when no women served on the school's faculty and the era of women's suffrage was a generation away.
  • A century later, the AAUW Educational Foundation awarded $2.8 million in fellowships and grants to 297 exceptional women across the country and around the world.
  • In 1885, the Foundation's forebearers sponsored radical research debunking the popular notion that higher education was harmful to women's health. This revelation heralded a new age for women in education and professional careers.
  • A century later, the groundbreaking study: The AAUW Report: How Schools Shortchange Girls identifying pervasive gender bias in our nation's schools - was issued in paperback and translated into French, Spanish, and Chinese. In 1998, Gender Gaps: Where Schools Still Fail our Children Updated, the report presented further challenges to popular assumptions about equity and education.
